DNC SHILL Stephen Colbert: Lies of GOP Convention ‘Stick to Your Soul Like Hot Tar’

News & Politics

Stephen Colbert isn’t even trying to make you laugh anymore. The Late Night host has abandoned comedy for angry, unfunny verbal op-eds and harangues at his audience. On Wednesday night, he grumbled to his audience: “Now, full disclosure, I did not watch much of the [Republican] convention tonight. And fullest disclosure, I did not watch any of it.” Colbert added, “Now, I know by not watching the RNC, I didn’t do my job tonight. I just want to say, ‘I feel great about it.’”

The CBS host ranted: “Why should we watch their reality show if it doesn’t reflect our reality? Why subject ourselves to their lies that stick to your soul like hot tar?” Talking to Nancy Pelosi, Colbert repeated himself: “I did not watch the RNC tonight because I don’t know why I will give air to their lies again. But I suppose I’ll try tomorrow again and see if I can get through it. What have you made of the week so far?”

Okay, we get it. You didn’t watch the Republican Convention. Why try and find funny material for you comedy show? Obviously laughs aren’t the point.

While talking to Pelosi, Colbert COULD have asked about the sexual assault allegations against Democratic nominee Joe Biden. But instead, he stuck with DNC-approved questions: “Now, in your speech, you talked about the centennial of the 19th Amendment which, of course, giving the women the right to vote. Today is the anniversary of it actually being added to the Constitution. As the first female Speaker of the House, or just as an American woman, what does this day mean to you?”

Last week, during the Democratic National Convention, Colbert endorsed the “decent,” “honest” Biden. Again, this is not comedy: “Joe Biden showed himself to be a man who is decent, compassionate, flawed but honest. And that is water in the desert.”

STEPHEN COLBERT:  Now, full disclosure, I did not watch much of the convention tonight. And fullest disclosure, I did not watch any of it. Because right now in America, we’re facing a global pandemic that has killed 180,000 Americans, heavily armed Rambo wanna-bees are murdering people in our streets. The strongest hurricane in the history of the Gulf Coast is making landfall as I speak and the RNC’s message is “Who is up for four more years?” Now, I know by not watching the RNC, I didn’t do my job tonight. I just want to say, “I feel great about it.” Why should we pay attention to what they are saying if none of what they are saying tonight is about what is happening in America right now? Why should we watch their reality show if it doesn’t reflect our reality? Why subject ourselves to their lies that stick to your soul like hot tar?

…

COLBERT: I want to talk to you for a moment about—  I did not watch the RNC tonight because I– I don’t know why I will give air to their lies again. But I suppose I’ll try tomorrow again and see if I can get through it. What have you made of the week so far?

COLBERT: Now, in your speech, you talked about the centennial of the 19th Amendment which, of course, giving the women the right to vote. Today is the anniversary of it actually being added to the Constitution. As the first female Speaker of the House, or just as an American woman, what does this day mean to you?

COLBERT: As I know you have said in the past what, are these people at the RNC who will not face our reality going to say to their children when this is all over?
